El área de estudio es el territorio comprendido entre los 18 y 25° N y los 72 y 88° W. Cómo fuentes de datos se utilizaron la batimetría del Atlas GEBCO, las tablas anuales de mareas (1975-2016), los datos de estructura termohalina (1966-2000), la afectación por eventos severos de los archivos INSMET y NHC, así como la combinación de los modelos HYCOM para la simulación numérica de la circulación oceánica. Se calculó el potencial energético en aguas profundas, en canales de entrada de bahías y entre algunos cayos. En aguas someras, la bahía de Nipe es la que muestra el mayor potencial de los casos analizados. En aguas profundas, la velocidad de las corrientes oceánicas se mantiene con valores bajos durante todo el año y solamente en áreas de la corriente de lazo, a varias decenas de kilómetros de la costa noroccidental cubana, se observan velocidades mayores de 1 m/s. En aguas abiertas, el potencial energético aprovechable, en algunos meses puede ser del orden de hasta 2 kWatt/m2, mientras que en zona costera solo la Bahía de Nipe muestra un potencial considerable, del orden de 0.0076-0.49 kWatt/m2 durante el año.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT An analysis of the time-space behavior of marine streams and their energy potential in Cuban waters is presented. The study area is located between 18 - 25° N and 72 - 88° W. As data sources, the GEBCO Atlas bathymetry, the tide tables (1975-2016 period), the thermohaline structure data (1966-2000 period), the archive information about severe events and the HYCOM model for the numerical simulation of ocean circulation, were used. It is appreciated that the ocean stream speed is maintained around low values throughout the year and only in areas of the loop current, in tens of kilometers from the coastline, velocities greater than 1 m/s are observed. The available energy potential reaches up to 2 kWatt/m2 only in a few months, while in the coastal zone, it is the Nipe Bay that shows the greatest potential, of 0.0076-0.49 kWatt/m2 throughout the year.]]></p></abstract>
