Muchas evidencias apuntan el rol de las trampas extracelulares de neutrófilos y su arma de combate: la enzima mieloperoxidasa, como parte de la respuesta inmunológica frente a esta infección letal.  Objetivo:  determinar los valores de referencia de la enzima mieloperoxidasa, biomarcador para la evaluación del deterioro clínico en pacientes con COVID-19.  Métodos:  en el Departamento de Investigaciones Biomédicas de la Dirección de Ciencia e Innovación Tecnológica de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Villa Clara se implementó la determinación de la enzima mieloperoxidasa, se realizó su validación analítica y la estimación de los valores de referencia en una población supuestamente sana. Para esto se realizó un protocolo de investigación cuantitativo, transversal y descriptivo que involucró pacientes procedentes del Banco de Sangre Provincial. Como muestra biológica se empleó plasma sanguíneo, al que se le realizó la estimación de la actividad mieloperoxidásica. Se determinaron los límites interfractílicos entre 2,5 y 97,5 percentiles.  Resultados:  los parámetros analíticos de linealidad, precisión y veracidad del método se correspondieron con las exigencias de los estándares internacionales. Los valores de referencia para la población sana estudiada estuvieron en el rango entre 110 y 960U/l.  Conclusiones:  los valores de referencia guardan relación con otros informes y contribuyen a la evaluación del estado paciente y como biomarcador pronóstico de gravedad del paciente afectado por la COVID-19.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  the COVID-19 pandemic has come to undermine human physical and spiritual health. Many evidences point to the role of neutrophil extracellular traps and their combat weapon: Myeloperoxidase enzyme, as part of the immune response against this lethal infection.  Objective:  to determine the reference values of the enzyme myeloperoxidase, biomarker for the evaluation of clinical deterioration in patients with Covid-19.  Methods:  in the Department of Biomedical Research of the Direction of Science and Technological Innovation, University of Medical Sciences of Villa Clara, the determination of the enzyme Myeloperoxidase was implemented, its analytical validation and the estimation of reference values in a supposedly healthy population were carried out. For this purpose, a quantitative, transversal and descriptive research protocol was carried out involving patients from the Provincial Blood Bank. Blood plasma was used as a biological sample and myeloperoxidase activity was estimated. Interfractal limits were determined between 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles.  Results:  the analytical parameters of linearity, precision and trueness of the method corresponded to the requirements of international standards. The reference values for the healthy population studied were in the range between 110-960 U/L.  Conclusions:  the reference values are related to other reports and contribute to the evaluation of patient status and as a prognostic biomarker of severity of the patient affected by COVID-19.]]></p></abstract>
