La densidad mineral ósea disminuida se relaciona directamente con la edad avanzada y la presencia de factores de riesgo clínicos como la diabetes mellitus y la postmenopausia.  Objetivo:  describir la densidad mineral ósea y su asociación con la edad y las características clínicas de la diabetes mellitus 2 en mujeres postmenopáusicas.  Métodos:  se realizó una investigación descriptiva, transversal, en 119 mujeres postmenopáusicas, con y sin diabetes mellitus, que fueron atendidas en la Consulta de Endocrinología del Hospital &#8220;Arnaldo Milián Castro&#8221;, en el período comprendido desde enero de 2018 hasta septiembre de 2019, y seleccionadas por un muestreo intencional no probabilístico.  Resultados:  entre las mujeres con diabetes la osteoporosis fue más frecuente en la columna lumbar (66,1%), seguida de la osteopenia (21%) y de la densidad mineral ósea normal (13%). A nivel de cadera el 39% tuvo osteopenia, el 35,5% osteoporosis y el 29% una densidad mineral ósea normal. Hubo una asociación estadística significativa de la disminución de la densidad mineral ósea en la columna lumbar con el mal control metabólico (p=0,05), las complicaciones de la diabetes mellitus (p=0,030) y el tratamiento con metformina (p=0,027).  Conclusiones:  en las mujeres postmenopáusicas con diabetes estudiadas, en comparación con las mujeres sin diabetes, la densidad mineral ósea disminuyó a medida que aumentó la edad. A nivel de columna lumbar la presencia de osteopenia y osteoporosis estuvo asociada con el mal control metabólico, el tratamiento con metformina y la presencia de complicaciones crónicas de la diabetes.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  osteoporosis is a global health problem, its importance increases with population aging. Decreased bone mineral density is directly related to advanced age and the presence of clinical risk factors such as diabetes mellitus and postmenopause.  Objective:  to describe bone mineral density and its association with age and clinical characteristics of diabetes mellitus 2 in postmenopausal women.  Methods:  a descriptive, cross-sectional research was conducted in 119 postmenopausal women, with and without diabetes mellitus, who were seen at the Endocrinology Consultation of the &#8220;Arnaldo Milián Castro&#8221; Hospital, in the period from January 2018 to September 2019, and selected by non-probabilistic purposive sampling.  Results:  among women with diabetes osteoporosis was more frequent in the lumbar spine (66.1%), followed by osteopenia (21%) and normal bone mineral density (13%). At the hip level 39% had osteopenia, 35.5% osteoporosis and 29% normal bone mineral density. There was a significant statistical association of decreased bone mineral density in the lumbar spine with poor metabolic control (p=0.05), diabetes mellitus complications (p=0.030) and metformin treatment (p=0.027).  Conclusions:  in the postmenopausal women with diabetes studied, compared to women without diabetes, bone mineral density decreased with increasing age.
