Objetivos:  determinar las curvas de tendencia temporal de cinco tipos de defectos congénitos folato-sensibles no sindrómicos e identificar factores de riesgo asocidos a estos.  Métodos:  se realizó un estudio observacional, analítico, retrospectivo de casos y controles de base poblacional en la Provincia de Villa Clara entre los años 2013 y 2018. Se determinaron las tasas de prevalencia de defectos congénitos entre nacidos vivos vivos, nacidos muertos y en interrupciones electivas del embarazo y se realizó el análisis de la línea de tendencia polinómica de las tasas de prevalencia para los diferentes tipos de defectos congénitos.  Resultados:  se observó una tendencia decreciente o estable para las hendiduras labiopalatinas, la gastrosquisis y el síndrome de Down, mientras que para las cardiopatías congénitas conotroncales y los defectos del tubo neural se constató una tendencia discretamente creciente.  Conclusiones:  la tendencia discretamente ascendente identificada en las tasas de prevalencia de cardiopatías congénitas conotroncales y de los defectos del tubo neural tiene un origen multifactorial, en el que se imbrican la predisposición genética y los diferentes factores de riesgo como el consumo deficiente de ácido fólico en períodos críticos del desarrollo embrionario.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  folic acid plays a crucial role in the epigenetic regulation of embryofetal development and its deficiency has been shown to be related to the appearance of different congenital defects.  Objectives:  to determine the time trend curves of five types of non-syndromic folate-sensitive birth defects and to identify risk factors associated with them.  Methods:  an observational, analytical, retrospective, population-based case-control study was conducted in Villa Clara Province between 2013 and 2018. Prevalence rates of congenital defects among live births, stillbirths and elective terminations of pregnancy were determined and the analysis of the polynomial trend line of prevalence rates for the different types of congenital defects was performed.  Results:  a decreasing or stable trend was observed for cleft lip and palate, gastroschisis and Down syndrome, while a slightly increasing trend was observed for congenital conotruncal heart defects and neural tube defects.  Conclusions:  the discrete upward trend identified in the prevalence rates of congenital congenital heart disease and neural tube defects has a multifactorial origin, in which genetic predisposition and different risk factors such as deficient consumption of folic acid in critical periods of embryonic development are intertwined.]]></p></abstract>
