Summary: The autopsy findings of 315 stillborns macerated in a period of 12 years, which accounted for 47.9 % of the fetal deaths in that period, are presented. The relationship between the maceration degree and the findings was established. The most frequent findings were the changes caused by anoxia and malnutrition. No positive morphological data were obtained in 83 cases. 17 malformations were diagnosed, which are briefly described by system: 4 multiple, 4 of the urinary system, 3 of the central nervous system, 2 of the cardiovascular and respiratory system, respectively, 1 of the skeleton, and 1 of the digestive system. The authors make emphasis on the importance of performing a complete autopsy to have a reliable diagnosis regarding not only the positive but the negative findings, too.
Subject headings: FETAL DEATH/pathology; FETUS/pathology.
