Picos, Piau&#237;, Brasil. </font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p>&nbsp;</p> <hr size="1" noshade>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>RESUMO</b> </font></p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Introdu&#231;&#227;o:    </b> a dificuldade na ado&#231;&#227;o de h&#225;bitos alimentares mais saud&#225;veis    e o estilo de vida sedent&#225;rio, aliados &#224; expectativa de perda de peso    f&#225;cil, induzem, de forma equivocada, a procura por m&#233;todos que promovam    emagrecimento sem esfor&#231;o, como a utiliza&#231;&#227;o de medicamentos    para a redu&#231;&#227;o e/ou manuten&#231;&#227;o do peso constitu&#237;dos    por &#225;cido hidroxic&#237;trico (HCA) extra&#237;do de <i>Garcinia cambogia    </i>(garc&#237;nia), e gisenos&#237;deos, extra&#237;dos de<i> Panax ginseng    </i>(ginseng). Por&#233;m, dados sobre o potencial t&#243;xico destes dois compostos    qu&#237;micos s&#227;o pouco divulgados e os produtos do qual fazem parte da    formula&#231;&#227;o no Brasil s&#227;o de venda livre e consumidos indiscriminadamente.    <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Objetivo:    </b> explicitar os resultados das principais pesquisas de avalia&#231;&#227;o    de toxicidade destes dois compostos com a&#231;&#227;o anorex&#237;gena.    <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>M&#233;todos:</b>    para o desenvolvimento de tal objetivo foi realizada uma ampla pesquisa bibliogr&#225;fica    em importantes bases de dados indexadas.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Resultados    e discuss&#227;o: </b> verificou-se que alguns trabalhos j&#225; foram realizados    por&#233;m &#233; necess&#225;rio que outros estudos sejam conduzidos, utilizando-se    diferentes organismos de provas e diferentes doses destes compostos. Tamb&#233;m    foi observado que os resultados obtidos at&#233; o momento muitas vezes s&#227;o    contradit&#243;rios, sendo portanto, alvo de discuss&#227;o entre os pesquisadores.    ]]></body>

Sin embargo, los datos sobre    la toxicidad potencial de estos productos qu&#237;micos son poco divulgados    y forman parte de una formulaci&#243;n que es consumida en Brasil de forma indiscriminada    y se venden libremente.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Objetivo:</b>    compilar los resultados de las principales investigaciones toxicol&#243;gicas    de estos dos compuestos con acci&#243;n anorex&#237;gena.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>M&#233;todos:    </b> para este trabajo se llev&#243; a cabo una extensa b&#250;squeda en la    literatura en importantes bases de datos indexados.<b>     <br>   </b></font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Resultados    y discusi&#243;n: </b> se verific&#243; que existen trabajos realizados, pero    es necesario llevar a cabo otros estudios empleando otros organismos de prueba    y diferentes dosis de los mismos. <body><![CDATA[<p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Introduction:</b>    difficulty in adopting healthy eating habits, a sedentary lifestyle and the    wish to lose weight easily, lead to the search for methods that promote weight    loss effortlessly using drugs containing hydroxycitric acid (HCA) extracted    from <i>Garcinia cambogia </i>(garcinia) and ginsenosides extracted from <i>Panax    ginseng</i> (ginseng). However, information on the potential toxicity of these    chemical products is not widely available, though they are present in a weight-loss    drug which is sold freely and used indiscriminately in Brazil.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Objective:</b>    compile the results of the main toxicological studies on these two anorexic    compounds.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Methods:</b>    a broad bibliographic search was conducted in important indexed databases.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Results    and discussion:</b> it was found that several studies on the topic have been    performed, but further research is required using other test organisms and different    doses. It was also found that the results so far obtained are contradictory,    thus constituting a subject of debate among researchers.     <br>   </font><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><a><b>Conclusions:</b></a>    it is necessary to increase the number of studies evaluating the toxic effects    of these compounds manufactured for the market, establishing limits for their    use by the population. </font></p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b>Key words:</b>    appetite inhibitors, hydroxycitric acid, ginsenosides, toxicity. </font></p> <hr size="1" noshade> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><br clear="all"/> </font>      <p>&nbsp; </p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">INTRODU&#199;&#195;O</font></b>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Devido ao aumento    das taxas de obesidade em todo o mundo e da frequente, e &#224;s vezes, equivocada    associa&#231;&#227;o entre magreza e sa&#250;de, observa-se uma busca crescente    por m&#233;todos que auxiliem ou promovam a perda de peso. Dessa forma, nas    &#250;ltimas d&#233;cadas, pesquisadores t&#234;m dedicado significativos esfor&#231;os    no estudo dos mecanismos fisiol&#243;gicos do controle do apetite, da fome e    da saciedade e na formula&#231;&#227;o de medicamentos, como os auxiliadores    na redu&#231;&#227;o e/ou manuten&#231;&#227;o do peso para o tratamento e controle    da obesidade.<sup>1</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> H&#225; uma extensa    variedade destes produtos disponibilizados no mercado, com &#234;nfase aqueles    &#224; base de plantas, que s&#227;o muito consumidos e prefer&#237;veis pela    popula&#231;&#227;o em fun&#231;&#227;o de serem rotulados como &quot;naturais&quot;    e, erroneamente, como in&#243;cuos <sup>2,3</sup>, e da venda controlada dos    anorex&#237;genos alop&#225;ticos, do seu alto custo e de seus efeitos colaterais    severos ao organismo quando ingeridos por tempo prolongado.<sup>4,5</sup> </font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> No entanto, segundo    Reis &amp; Nascimento<sup>6</sup> e Veiga-Junior,<sup>7</sup> muitos componentes    qu&#237;micos das plantas constituintes destes medicamentos n&#227;o possuem    o seu perfil t&#243;xico conhecido e/ou divulgado de maneira satisfat&#243;ria.    Sendo assim, o consumo inadequado destes fitoter&#225;picos pode induzir ou    potencializar problemas graves, principalmente, se a sua utiliza&#231;&#227;o    estiver associada a outros fatores que potencializem efeitos adversos &#224;    sa&#250;de como a utiliza&#231;&#227;o de medicamentos, h&#225;bitos alimentares,    estilo de vida, caracter&#237;sticas fisiol&#243;gicas, entre outros. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Entre as in&#250;meras    plantas presentes em medicamentos anorex&#237;genos naturais destacam-se as    esp&#233;cies <i>Garcinia cambogia </i>Roxb. (Clusiaceae) e <i>Panax ginseng</i>    A.C. Meyer (Araliaceae), que t&#234;m em sua constitui&#231;&#227;o o &#225;cido    hidroxic&#237;trico (HCA) e os ginsenos&#237;deos, respectivamente, que possuem    a propriedade de aumentar a oxida&#231;&#227;o de &#225;cidos graxos no organismo.<sup>8</sup>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Assim, diante    do conhecimento de que compostos qu&#237;micos presentes em plantas medicinais    s&#227;o constituintes de um grande n&#250;mero de medicamentos auxiliadores    na redu&#231;&#227;o e/ou manuten&#231;&#227;o do peso, de que a popula&#231;&#227;o    em geral faz uso indiscriminado destes produtos por terem compostos qu&#237;micos    de origem natural, e pela ampla divulga&#231;&#227;o na m&#237;dia destes medicamentos    a base de <i>G. cambogia</i> e <i>P. ginseng</i>, este trabalho teve por objetivo    reunir informa&#231;&#245;es, por meio de um levantamento bibliogr&#225;fico,    sobre os resultados das avalia&#231;&#245;es de toxicidade de compostos qu&#237;micos    com a&#231;&#227;o anorex&#237;gena extra&#237;dos destas duas plantas. </font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">M&#201;TODOS</font></b>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Para uma completa    revis&#227;o, somente fontes prim&#225;rias foram usadas. As bases de dados    pesquisadas foram MEDLINE/<i>Index Medicus</i> (Medical Literature Analysis    and Retrieval System Online), SciELO (Scientific Eletronic Library Online),    PubMed e Highwire. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> As informa&#231;&#245;es,    disponibilizadas em Ingl&#234;s ou Portugu&#234;s, entre o ano 2000 at&#233;    os dias atuais, foram coletadas usando as seguintes palavras-chave: <i>Garcinia    cambogia </i>Roxb, <i>Panax ginseng</i> A.C. Meyer, anorex&#237;geno, &#225;cido    hidroxic&#237;trico e ginsenos&#237;deos, toxicidade. </font></p>     <p>&nbsp; </p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">RESULTADOS    E DISCUSS&#195;O</font></b> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> <b>Excesso de    peso e medicamentos anorex&#237;genos a base de plantas medicinais </b></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A obesidade &#233;    uma doen&#231;a end&#234;mica dos pa&#237;ses desenvolvidos e dos que est&#227;o    em ascens&#227;o econ&#244;mica, como o Brasil, e constitui, juntamente com    as doen&#231;as infectocontagiosas emergentes, um dos maiores desafios de sa&#250;de    p&#250;blica do s&#233;culo XXI. <sup>9,10</sup> Tal patologia est&#225; associada    ao aumento tanto da morbidade quanto da mortalidade de seus portadores e &#233;    reconhecida como uma condi&#231;&#227;o cl&#237;nica cr&#244;nica que requer    longo tempo de tratamento.<sup>3</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A preval&#234;ncia    desta patologia triplicou nas &#250;ltimas d&#233;cadas em todo o mundo, e continua    a aumentar em um ritmo alarmante, devido, principalmente, a globaliza&#231;&#227;o    social e econ&#244;mica que modificou os h&#225;bitos de vida relacionados &#224;s    pr&#225;ticas alimentares e estimulou um perfil populacional sedent&#225;rio.<sup>11</sup>    O excesso de peso acarreta danos &#224; qualidade de vida devido &#224;s limita&#231;&#245;es    f&#237;sicas que pode causar aos indiv&#237;duos e, al&#233;m disso, est&#225;    associado ao desencadeamento de co-morbidades tais como diabetes tipo 2, dislipidemias    e doen&#231;as cardiovasculares.<sup>12,13</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Diante desse contexto,    o uso de produtos auxiliadores da redu&#231;&#227;o e/ou manuten&#231;&#227;o    do peso aumentou nos &#250;ltimos anos, sendo utilizado por uma parcela significativa    da popula&#231;&#227;o em todo mundo na forma de c&#225;psulas gelatinosas,    comprimidos, p&#243; ou ch&#225;s.<sup>14-16</sup> No entanto, a ingest&#227;o    destes produtos, no Brasil, &#233; feita quase sempre sem a prescri&#231;&#227;o    e acompanhamento de profissionais da sa&#250;de.<sup>17</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Os medicamentos    anorex&#237;genos a base de plantas agem como estimulante do metabolismo ou    como moderadores do apetite.<sup>18</sup> No Brasil, s&#227;o comercializados    livremente em farm&#225;cias, lojas de produtos naturais e supermercados, e    o marketing desses medicamentos ressalta, por meio de banners, internet, televis&#227;o,    r&#225;dio, jornais e revistas seus benef&#237;cios valendo-se do r&#243;tulo    &#8220;produto natural&#8221; e declara, na maioria das vezes, a inexist&#234;ncia    de efeitos colaterais e toxicol&#243;gicos.<sup>19</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Infelizmente,    grande &#233; o n&#250;mero de pessoas que acredita que o &#8220;natural&#8221;    n&#227;o faz mal, e, por conseguinte, considera que estes produtos a base de    plantas medicinais podem acelerar o gasto cal&#243;rico sem causar efeitos adversos    ao organismo.<sup>6,7</sup> Muitos dos metab&#243;litos secund&#225;rios oriundos    de vegetais podem ser genot&#243;xicos e carcinog&#234;nicos quando utilizados    indiscriminadamente, agindo em diversos s&#237;tios de a&#231;&#227;o em diferentes    &#243;rg&#227;os e tecidos e promovendo intera&#231;&#245;es antag&#244;nicas    ou sinerg&#237;sticas quando utilizados simultaneamente com f&#225;rmacos, sint&#233;ticos    ou n&#227;o.<sup>20, 21,18</sup> Estudos de toxicidade avaliando compostos qu&#237;micos    extra&#237;dos de plantas t&#234;m sido realizados para verificar, sobretudo,    a a&#231;&#227;o dos mesmos a n&#237;vel celular.<sup>22-24</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A Ag&#234;ncia    Nacional de Vigil&#226;ncia Sanit&#225;ria (ANVISA), &#243;rg&#227;o do Minist&#233;rio    da Sa&#250;de Brasileiro que regulamenta a venda de medicamentos no pa&#237;s,    tem tomado medidas importantes na comercializa&#231;&#227;o dos fitoter&#225;picos,    de maneira geral, por meio da Resolu&#231;&#227;o da Diretoria Colegiada (RDC)    48/2004, que estabelece os aspectos essenciais ao registro destes como identifica&#231;&#227;o,    padr&#227;o de qualidade, provas de efic&#225;cia e padroniza&#231;&#227;o das    informa&#231;&#245;es.<sup>25</sup> No entanto, apesar do controle exigido pelo    Minist&#233;rio da Sa&#250;de, a utiliza&#231;&#227;o dos medicamentos a base    de plantas medicinais ainda suscita uma s&#233;rie de d&#250;vidas quanto aos    seus efeitos t&#243;xicos. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> O reconhecimento    da import&#226;ncia de plantas para o desenvolvimento de f&#225;rmacos modernos    e terapeuticamente mais eficazes foi finalmente e nacionalmente oficializado    pelo lan&#231;amento da Pol&#237;tica Nacional de Plantas Medicinais e Fitoter&#225;picos,    aprovada por meio do Decreto n <sup>o</sup> 5.813 em 22 de junho de 2006, a    qual estabelece diretrizes para o desenvolvimento de a&#231;&#245;es voltadas    &#224; garantia do acesso seguro e uso racional de plantas medicinais e fitoter&#225;picos,    ao desenvolvimento de tecnologias e inova&#231;&#245;es, ao fortalecimento das    cadeias e dos arranjos produtivos e ao uso sustent&#225;vel da Biodiversidade    Brasileira.<sup>26</sup> Por&#233;m, ainda n&#227;o h&#225; neste pa&#237;s    um &#243;rg&#227;o que fiscalize e controle a venda destes produtos, j&#225;    que os mesmos s&#227;o comercializados sem prescri&#231;&#227;o m&#233;dica.    Como consequ&#234;ncia, o mercado paralelo e as farm&#225;cias os comercializam    livremente.<sup>17</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Tamb&#233;m &#233;    importante ressaltar que alguns dos produtos a base de garc&#237;nia e ginseng    possuem adulterantes em sua formula&#231;&#227;o que potencializam a a&#231;&#227;o    ou agem de forma antag&#244;nica aos constituintes destas plantas.<sup>27</sup>    J&#225; foi demonstrado que alguns destes anorex&#237;genos s&#227;o frequentemente    adulterados, de forma n&#227;o declarada, com metais pesados, como o ars&#234;nio    e o merc&#250;rio, altamente t&#243;xicos ao sistema nervoso central e ao trato    digest&#243;rio humano, e f&#225;rmacos em geral, como a teofilina, diazepan    e sildenafil, cortic&#243;ides, antidepressivos e anorex&#237;genos sint&#233;ticos    com o intuito de promover resultados r&#225;pidos e diminuir a sensa&#231;&#227;o    de ansiedade dos usu&#225;rios durante a perda de peso.<sup>17</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A seguir s&#227;o    descritos os resultados dos principais estudos de toxicidade de compostos tidos    como anorex&#237;genos presentes nas plantas <i>G. cambojia</i> e a <i>P. Ginseng</i>.    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> <b>Atividade do    &#193;cido Hidroxic&#237;trico (HCA) extra&#237;do de <i>G. cambogia </i>em    testes para avalia&#231;&#227;o de toxicidade </b></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> A <i>Garcinia    </i>&#233; um g&#234;nero da Fam&#237;lia Clusiaceae e possui numerosas esp&#233;cies    de &#225;rvores e arbustos nativos da &#193;sia, &#193;frica, Polin&#233;sia    e Am&#233;ricas. Dentre suas esp&#233;cies encontra-se a <i>G. cambogia</i>,    conhecida popularmente como garc&#237;nia, planta de pequeno porte, utilizada    h&#225; centenas de anos na medicina tradicional da &#205;ndia para o tratamento    de v&#225;rias doen&#231;as.<sup>28</sup> Seu fruto &#233; conhecido como tamarindo    e do pericarpo de suas sementes se extra&#237; o &#225;cido hidroxic&#237;trico    (HCA), composto integrante da formula&#231;&#227;o de v&#225;rios medicamentos    anorex&#237;genos naturais. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> O HCA parece inibir    a a&#231;&#227;o do ATP citrato liase impedindo a clivagem do citrato em oxalato    e acetil-CoA, essenciais para a s&#237;ntese de lip&#237;dios por meio de oses,    sendo essas subunidades direcionadas para a produ&#231;&#227;o de glicog&#234;nio.<sup>29,30</sup>    Ainda com a inibi&#231;&#227;o da forma&#231;&#227;o de acetil-CoA ocorre aumento    da oxida&#231;&#227;o dos &#225;cidos graxos produzindo grandes quantidades    de cetonas que atuam na redu&#231;&#227;o da deposi&#231;&#227;o de gordura    a partir da lipog&#234;nese.<sup>31,30</sup> Segundo Pal<sup>32</sup> e M&#225;rquez<i>    et al.,</i><sup>3</sup> o HCA tamb&#233;m exerce efeito sobre os genes que codificam    receptores de serotonina aumentando a secre&#231;&#227;o deste horm&#244;nio,    intensificando a sensa&#231;&#227;o de saciedade e, consequentemente, reduzindo    a ingest&#227;o alimentar. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Alguns estudos    sobre a toxicidade do HCA das sementes de <i>G. cambogia </i>foram feitos, como    o de Lee<i> et al.</i><sup>33</sup> que avaliaram a genotoxicidade deste &#225;cido    por meio dos ensaios de muta&#231;&#227;o bacteriana e de aberra&#231;&#245;es    cromoss&#244;micas e micron&#250;cleos em c&#233;lulas de medula &#243;ssea    de ratos, em tratamento agudo e cr&#244;nico, com doses comumente utilizadas    pela popula&#231;&#227;o para a redu&#231;&#227;o do peso. Observou-se que esse    composto induziu a forma&#231;&#227;o de micron&#250;cleos, principalmente ap&#243;s    administra&#231;&#227;o cr&#244;nica. Deshmukh<i> et al</i>.,<sup>34</sup> ao    avaliar o potencial teratog&#234;nico de HCA em ratos, verificaram que as super-dosagens    provocaram anormalidades esquel&#233;ticas brandas e altera&#231;&#245;es hep&#225;ticas    na prole destes animais. Lee &amp; Lee<sup>35</sup> observaram que superdosagens    de HCA foram altamente citot&#243;xica &#224;s c&#233;lulas sangu&#237;neas    de camundongos. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Corroborando os    dados de toxicidade do HCA obtidos por Lee &amp; Lee,<sup>35</sup> Lee <i>et    al.,</i><sup>33</sup><i> </i>Deshmukh<i> et al</i>.,<sup>34</sup> Stevens <i>et    al</i>.<sup>36</sup> observaram que altas doses de HCA acrescentadas na dieta    de ratos causaram aberra&#231;&#245;es cromoss&#244;micas em c&#233;lulas de    sangue perif&#233;rico e atrofia testicular. Outro estudo avaliando o potencial    t&#243;xico de HCA desenvolvido por Shara<i> et al</i>.<sup>37</sup> mostrou    que a administra&#231;&#227;o de doses elevadas em ratos obesos por um per&#237;odo    de 90 dias promoveu altera&#231;&#245;es na peroxida&#231;&#227;o lip&#237;dica    hep&#225;tica, atrofia testicular severa, altera&#231;&#245;es cromoss&#244;micas    em n&#250;mero significativo em c&#233;lulas do c&#243;lon e modifica&#231;&#245;es    histopatol&#243;gicas em v&#225;rios tecidos destes roedores. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Observa-se, a    partir dos relatos feitos acima, que doses elevadas do HCA provocaram efeitos    adversos severos e significativos aos sistemas de prova utilizados. Por&#233;m,    Naves<sup>38</sup> relata que a utiliza&#231;&#227;o deste &#225;cido, em doses    recomend&#225;veis pela FDA ( <i>Food and Drug Administration</i>) n&#227;o    causa efeitos t&#243;xicos ao organismo humano. No entanto, este autor n&#227;o    considerou o tempo de exposi&#231;&#227;o, se agudo ou cr&#244;nico nem a forma    de administra&#231;&#227;o. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Assim como Naves    e Paschoal,<sup>38</sup> Downs <i>et al</i><sup>39</sup> relatam que o HCA nas    doses de n&#227;o ocorre ultrapassagem atrav&#233;s da barreira hematoencef&#225;lica,    descartando uma toxicidade direta ao sistema nervoso em roedores. Reis<i> et    al</i><sup>,40</sup> observaram-se que a dose de HCA comumente utilizada pela    popula&#231;&#227;o teve efeito protetor &#224;s c&#233;lulas de c&#243;lon    de camundongos quando administradas em tratamento agudo. Hayamizu <i>et al</i><sup>41</sup>    em um estudo cr&#244;nico com 44 homens adultos verificaram que este composto    qu&#237;mico, em doses recomendadas pela FDA, n&#227;o afetou os n&#237;veis    de estradiol e testosterona desses indiv&#237;duos. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Manenti<sup>42</sup>    ressalta que a afirma&#231;&#227;o de n&#227;o toxicidade do HCA, mesmo que    em doses recomendadas pelos &#243;rg&#227;os regulamentadores, &#233; precipitada,    visto que &#233; insuficiente o n&#250;mero de pesquisas realizadas que possam    atestar o uso seguro deste &#225;cido, particularmente pela aus&#234;ncia, at&#233;    o momento, de testes toxicol&#243;gicos em primatas e estudos delineados e otimizados    em humanos. Complementando a cita&#231;&#227;o de Manenti,<sup>42</sup> Marquez<i>    et al</i><sup>3</sup> relatam que a maioria dos estudos sobre a a&#231;&#227;o    t&#243;xica do HCA em seres humanos e animais foram feitos em amostras pequenas    e em curto e/ou m&#233;dio prazos, e destacam, que, exceto em casos raros, as    pesquisas efetuadas com animais experimentais demonstram toxicidade significativa,    pelo menos, em uma das doses testadas. Assim, at&#233; a presente data, a seguran&#231;a    de utiliza&#231;&#227;o do HCA<i> </i>ainda &#233; objeto de debate entre pesquisadores.    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Outro foco de    discuss&#227;o &#233; o fato de que muitos profissionais da &#225;rea da sa&#250;de    afirmam que o HCA n&#227;o tem a&#231;&#227;o efetiva no tratamento da obesidade,    principalmente quando utilizado em longo prazo.<sup>43,16</sup> Assim, segundo    M&#225;rquez<i> et al</i>,<sup>3</sup> &#233; necess&#225;rio realizar estudos    mais detalhados, n&#227;o apenas sobre sua toxicidade, mas tamb&#233;m sobre    sua real a&#231;&#227;o terep&#234;utica para auxiliar na redu&#231;&#227;o    e/ou manuten&#231;&#227;o do peso. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> <b>Atividade de    saponinas extra&#237;das de raiz de <i>P. ginseng</i> em testes de avalia&#231;&#227;o    de toxicidade </b></font></p>     <p> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><i>P. ginseng</i>    , da Fam&#237;lia Araliaceae, &#233; utilizada h&#225; muitos anos na medicina    tradicional chinesa e, mundialmente, difundida devido as suas propriedades medicinais.<sup>44</sup>    Muitos estudos j&#225; mostraram sua efic&#225;cia como antioxidante, na preven&#231;&#227;o    de doen&#231;as do sistema cardiovascular, imunol&#243;gico, end&#243;crino,    nervoso, e no combate a c&#233;lulas neopl&#225;sicas.<sup>45</sup> </font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Todas as partes    desta planta cont&#234;m compostos farmacologicamente ativos, com grande destaque    para suas ra&#237;zes,<sup>46</sup> ricas em oxalato de c&#225;lcio, gr&#227;os    de amido e saponinas.<sup>47</sup> Estas saponinas s&#227;o chamadas de ginsenos&#237;deos    e fazem parte da formula&#231;&#227;o de um grande n&#250;mero de medicamentos    anorex&#237;genos naturais por ampliarem a capacidade do m&#250;sculo esquel&#233;tico    em oxidar &#225;cidos graxos e por inibirem a lipoperoxida&#231;&#227;o, impedindo    a forma&#231;&#227;o de radicais livres.<sup>48,44</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Os ginsenos&#237;deos    foram testados por Chan<sup>49</sup> em ratos e camundongos, via gavagem, durante    quinze dias, tr&#234;s meses e dois anos, em doses menores que a recomend&#225;vel,    em dose recomend&#225;vel e em doses acima da recomend&#225;vel pela FDA. O    mesmo estudo foi conduzido em cepas de <i>Salmonella Typhimurium</i> e <i>Escherichia    coli</i>. Os dados obtidos mostraram que em nenhum organismo de prova estas    saponinas tiveram atividade mutag&#234;nica e citot&#243;xica. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Abdel-Azien<i>    et al</i>.<sup>50</sup> mostraram que estas saponinas estabilizaram o crescimento    tumores hep&#225;ticos induzidos por aflatoxina ap&#243;s trinta dias de tratamento,    Similarmente, Lee<i> et al</i>.<sup>33</sup> verificaram que os ginsenos&#237;deos    tiveram efeito protetor antic&#226;ncer contra neoplasia de pulm&#227;o. Corroborando    com os relatos de Abdel-Azien et al.<sup>50</sup> e Lee<i> et al</i>,<sup>33</sup>    Volate et al<sup>51</sup> observaram que estes compostos qu&#237;micos reduziram    significativamente o crescimento de tumores de c&#243;lon em roedores. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Entretanto, de    acordo com Turolla e Nascimento,<sup>52</sup> a administra&#231;&#227;o cr&#244;nica    de ginsenos&#237;deos pode promover sangramento vaginal, mastalgia e s&#237;ndrome    de abuso por ingest&#227;o cr&#244;nica, desencadeando hipertens&#227;o, nervosismo,    ins&#244;nia, erup&#231;&#245;es cut&#226;neas e diarr&#233;ia matinal. Outros    estudos demonstraram que dosagens elevadas destas saponinas diminui a a&#231;&#227;o    do sistema imunol&#243;gico em ratos e a s&#237;ntese de col&#225;geno,<sup>53</sup>    acelerou o foto envelhecimento em roedores com c&#226;ncer de pele,<sup>54</sup>    inibiu a a&#231;&#227;o da citocromo P<sub>450</sub> em idosos,<sup>55</sup>    inibiu enzimas, como as isoenzimas da citocromo P<sub>450</sub>, que participam    da metaboliza&#231;&#227;o e absor&#231;&#227;o de medicamentos quimioter&#225;picos    no organismo humano e promoveu o surgimento de efeitos adversos por promover    intera&#231;&#245;es medicamentosas antag&#244;nicas.<sup>56</sup> </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Diante do exposto,    pode-se observar que da mesma forma que o HCA, os ginsenos&#237;deos possuem    estudos de toxicidade com resultados contr&#225;rios. Dessa forma mais pesquisas    para avalia&#231;&#227;o do efeito t&#243;xico destes compostos devem ser conduzidos,    em outros organismos de prova, tempos de exposi&#231;&#227;o e formas de tratamento,    para se estabelecer, com propriedade, os limites de uso para a popula&#231;&#227;o.    </font></p>     <p>&nbsp; </p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"><b><font size="3">CONCLUS&#195;O</font></b>    </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> O intenso apelo    comercial aqueceu, em todo o mundo, o consumo de produtos a base de plantas    medicinais, como aqueles que fazem parte da formula&#231;&#227;o de medicamentos    anorexigenos naturais, de modo geral. Entretanto, muitas vezes, n&#227;o h&#225;    limites de uso destes produtos e n&#227;o se fornecem, de maneira clara, informa&#231;&#245;es    sobre seus efeitos colaterais. Portanto o consumo destes pode representar riscos    para a sa&#250;de humana. Diante disso, pesquisas multidisciplinares avaliando    estes produtos tornam-se cada vez mais importantes para a defini&#231;&#227;o    dos seus potenciais terap&#234;uticos e t&#243;xicos, com destaque para aqueles    que possuem em sua formula&#231;&#227;o o HCA e os gisenos&#237;deos. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> Outro grande problema    &#233; a influ&#234;ncia da imprensa na difus&#227;o de informa&#231;&#245;es    err&#244;neas sobre os efeitos destes auxiliadores na redu&#231;&#227;o e/ou    manuten&#231;&#227;o de peso constitu&#237;do por HCA e ginsenos&#237;deos,    n&#227;o possuindo qualquer controle, restri&#231;&#227;o ou responsabilidade    na informa&#231;&#227;o dada, na maioria dos pa&#237;ses. No Brasil &#233; comum    ouvir propagandas sobre estes produtos com a seguinte express&#227;o "n&#227;o    faz mal para a sa&#250;de porque &#233; 100 % natural", e os mesmos podem ser    adquiridos pelo telefone. </font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2"> E por fim, agravando    ainda mais esta situa&#231;&#227;o, muitos consumidores de medicamentos naturais    a base destes compostos qu&#237;micos n&#227;o declaram para os m&#233;dicos    a utiliza&#231;&#227;o de tais produtos, gerando, dessa forma, riscos para o    paciente, uma vez que, o profissional pode se equivocar quanto ao diagn&#243;stico    em fun&#231;&#227;o das muitas intera&#231;&#245;es poss&#237;veis entre estes    compostos e outros medicamentos, naturais ou sint&#233;ticos. </font></p>     ]]></body>
