Objetivo:  determinar si el uso de la oxigenoterapia de alto flujo con cánulas nasales disminuye la necesidad de ventilación mecánica en pacientes con bronquiolitis aguda moderada.  Métodos: se realizó un estudio de cohortes ambispectivo en niños ingresados con el diagnóstico de bronquiolitis aguda moderada, en los períodos entre septiembre de 2017 a marzo de 2018 y septiembre de 2018 a marzo de 2019 en el hospital Infantil Sur de Santiago de Cuba.  Resultados: predominaron los pacientes del sexo masculino en ambos grupos de estudio, recibieron ventilación mecánica invasiva 5 niños (8,3 %) antes de la aplicación de la oxigenación de alto flujo y solo 1(1,7 %) en el período siguiente, el promedio de estadía osciló entre 4,8 y 5,3 días en la etapa anterior a la instauración de la nueva técnica y de 4,2 a 4,5 durante la aplicación de la misma.  Conclusiones: la aplicación de la oxigenación de alto flujo se relacionó con una disminución del uso de ventilación mecánica invasiva y de la estadía en pacientes con bronquiolitis aguda moderada.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction: recent studies that suggest the use of high-flow oxygen therapy for the treatment of acute bronchiolitis.  Objective: to determine if the use of high-flow oxygen therapy with nasal cannulas reduces the need for mechanical ventilation in patients with moderate acute bronchiolitis.  Methods:  an ambispective cohort study was carried out in children admitted with a diagnosis of acute bronchiolitis, in the periods between September 2017 to March 2018 and September 2018 to March 2019 at the South Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba.  Results: male patients predominated in both study groups, 5 children (8.3%) saw invasive mechanical ventilation before the application of high-flow oxygenation and only 1 (1.7%) in the following period, the average stay ranged between 4.8 and 5.3 days in the stage prior to the introduction of the new technique and from 4.2 to 4.5 during its application.  Conclusions: the application of high-flow oxygenation was related to a decrease in the use of invasive mechanical ventilation and length of stay in patients with moderate acute bronchiolitis.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[RESUMO  Introdução: estudos recentes que sugerem o uso de oxigenoterapia de alto fluxo para o tratamento da bronquiolite aguda.  Objetivo:  determinar se o uso de oxigenoterapia de alto fluxo com cânulas nasais reduz a necessidade de ventilação mecânica em pacientes com bronquiolite aguda moderada.  Métodos: foi realizado um estudo de coorte ambispectivo em crianças internadas com diagnóstico de bronquiolite aguda, nos períodos entre setembro de 2017 a março de 2018 e setembro de 2018 a março de 2019 no Hospital Infantil Sur de Santiago de Cuba.  Resultados:  pacientes do sexo masculino predominaram em ambos os grupos de estudo, 5 crianças (8,3%) fizeram ventilação mecânica invasiva antes da aplicação da oxigenação de alto fluxo e apenas 1 (1,7%) no período seguinte, a média de permanência variou entre 4,8 e 5,3 diasem a etapa anterior ao estabelecimento da nova técnica e de 4,2 a 4,5 durante sua aplicação.  Conclusões:  a aplicação de oxigenação de alto fluxo foi relacionada à diminuição do uso de ventilação mecânica invasiva e tempo de internação em pacientes com bronquiolite aguda moderada.]]></p></abstract>
