La neuralgia del trigémino causa un dolor intenso y repentino en la cara, el cual puede ser como un disparo, punzante o agudo.  Objetivo:  describir las opciones terapéuticas en la neuralgia del trigémino.  Métodos:  se realizó una revisión de la literatura mediante una búsqueda de información en las bases de datos Scopus y PubMed/MedLine. Se incluyeron ensayos clínicos y metaanálisis publicados en los últimos cinco años.  Resultados:  tanto el factor de crecimiento nervioso como el factor neurotrófico derivado del cerebro pueden causar y tratar el dolor. La aparición de dolor es un mecanismo biológico de autodefensa; durante el tratamiento, se puede mantener el efecto terapéutico de los factores neurotróficos y se puede reducir el dolor.  Conclusiones:  según los resultados, la clasificación de la neuralgia del trigémino ahora incluye dos subgrupos con base científica, la neuralgia del trigémino idiopática y la clásica. Es necesaria una evaluación diagnostica para de esta manera ofrecer un tratamiento adecuado.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction: the cranial nerve V is responsible for sensation in the face, including the mouth. Trigeminal neuralgia causes sudden intense pain in the face, which can be shooting, shooting or sharp.  Objective:  to describe the therapeutic options in trigeminal neuralgia.  Methods:  a literature review was performed by searching the Scopus and PubMed/MedLine databases for information. Clinical trials and meta-analyses published in the last five years were included.  Results:  both nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor can cause and treat pain. The occurrence of pain is a biological self-defense mechanism; during treatment, the therapeutic effect of neurotrophic factors can be maintained and pain can be reduced.  Conclusions:  based on the results, the classification of trigeminal neuralgia now includes two scientifically based subgroups, idiopathic and classic trigeminal neuralgia. A diagnostic evaluation is necessary in order to offer an adequate treatment.]]></p></abstract>
