An amount of 150 laying quails, 25 weeks old, were randomly distributed into three treatments and five repetitions per treatment for 70 days. Treatments consisted of dietary supplementation with 0, 0.5 and 1.0 % of J. curcas leaf powder. Alkaloids, coumarins, resins, anthocyanidins, saponins, free amino acids, tannins, quinones, flavonoids, and mucilages were found in the medicinal powder. The addition of 0.5 % of powder improved (P &lt;0.05) laying intensity (1.89 %), although there were no significant changes (P&gt; 0.05) for live weight, viability, feed intake, mass conversion and percentage of non-apt eggs. At weeks 30 and 35 of age, the experimental group with 0.5 % increased the height of the dense white (0.59 and 0.36 mm) and Haugh unit (2.82 and 2.09). The rest of egg quality indicators did not differ among treatments (P&gt; 0.05). In blood, the addition of 0.5% reduced (P &lt;0.05) glucose and creatinine concentration and the treatment with 1 % increased the concentration of aminotransferase aspartate, although without notable differences for the concentration of alanine aminotransferase, total cholesterol and uric acid (P &gt; 0.05). Dietary supplementation with 0.5 % of J. curcas leaf powder is suggested in laying quail diets to improve laying, egg quality and blood chemistry.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Para evaluar el efecto fitobiótico del polvo de hojas de Jatropha curcas en la productividad, calidad del huevo y bioquímica sanguínea de codornices (Coturnix japonica) ponedoras, se realizó el tamizaje fitoquímico de las hojas de la planta. Se distribuyeron aleatoriamente 150 codornices ponedoras, de 25 semanas de edad, en tres tratamientos y cinco repeticiones por tratamiento durante 70 días. Los tratamientos consistieron en la suplementación dietética con 0, 0.5 y 1.0 % del polvo de hojas de J. curca. En el polvo medicinal se encontró alcaloides, cumarinas, resinas, antocianidinas, saponinas, aminoácidos libres, taninos, quinonas, flavonoides y mucílagos. La adición de 0.5 % de polvo mejoró (P &lt; 0.05) la intensidad de puesta (1.89 %), aunque no hubo cambios significativos (P&gt;0.05) para el peso vivo, viabilidad, consumo de alimento, conversión masal y porcentaje de huevos no aptos. En las semanas 30 y 35 de edad, el grupo experimental con 0.5 % incrementó la altura de la clara densa (0.59 y 0.36 mm) y la unidad Haugh (2.82 y 2.09). El resto de los indicadores de calidad del huevo no difirieron entre tratamientos (P&gt;0.05). En sangre, la adición con 0.5 % redujo (P &lt; 0.05) la concentración de glucosa y creatinina y el tratamiento con 1 % incrementó la concentración de aspartato aminotrasferesa, aunque sin diferencias notables para la concentración de alanina aminotranferasa, colesterol total y ácido úrico (P &gt; 0.05). Se sugiere la suplementación dietética con 0.5 % de polvo de hojas de J. curcas en las dietas para codornices ponedoras para mejorar la puesta, calidad del huevo y bioquímica sanguínea.]]></p></abstract>
