A total of forty-eight steers (267 ± 29.5 kg) were randomly assigned to four treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement: free grazing without supplement, free grazing with supplement, day confinement without supplement, day confinement with supplement (n=2. 6 steers/repetition). It was grazed in weekly strips, with allocation of 8 kg of dry matter of grass/100 kg of live weight. Between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., the animals with day confinement were moved from the grass to a near pen, provided with water and artificial shade. The supplementation with more soluble dry distillery grains improved productive performance, regardless of grazing management. Supplementation increased dry matter intake and increased live weight gain 2.9 times, with a weight gain response of 0.928 kg/d and supplement conversion efficiency of 3.1:1 (supplement intake, kg/response in LW gain, kg). The day confinement improved the thermal welfare of animals and did not affect the intake of dry matter or grazing activity. However, it was not enough to express improvements in mean daily gain.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[En el Litoral Oeste de Uruguay, en 6 ha de sorgo forrajero, se evaluó el efecto de la suplementación con granos secos de destilería más solubles y el encierro diurno con sombra en el comportamiento productivo de novillos Hereford, que pastorean sorgo forrajero. Cuarenta y ocho novillos (267 ± 29.5 kg) se asignaron al azar a cuatro tratamientos en arreglo factorial 2x2: pastoreo libre sin suplemento, pastoreo libre con suplemento, encierro diurno sin suplemento, encierro diurno con suplemento (n=2. 6 novillos/ repetición). Se pastoreó en franjas semanales, con asignación de 8 kg de materia seca de pasto/100 kg de peso vivo. Se suplementó con granos secos de destilería más solubles, a razón de 1 kg de materia seca/100 kg de peso vivo. Entre las 10:00 a.m. y las 4:00 p.m., los animales con encierro diurno se retiraron de la pastura a un corral próximo, provisto de agua y sombra artificial. La suplementación con granos secos de destilería más solubles mejoró el comportamiento productivo, independientemente del manejo del pastoreo. La suplementación aumentó el consumo de materia seca e incrementó 2.9 veces la ganancia de peso vivo, con una respuesta en ganancia de peso de 0.928 kg/d y eficiencia de conversión del suplemento de 3.1:1 (consumo de suplemento, kg/ respuesta en ganancia de PV, kg). El encierro diurno mejoró el bienestar térmico de los animales y no afectó el consumo de materia seca ni la actividad de pastoreo. Sin embargo, no fue suficiente para expresar mejoras en la ganancia media diaria.]]></p></abstract>
