Ha ganado prestigio en mercados mundiales, incluyendo Estados Unidos, Asia y Europa por sus beneficios en el metabolismo de la glucosa y presentar propiedades hipocolesterolémicas, antiinflamatoria, anti-obesidad, hepatoprotectora y antioxidante. El objetivo fue reportar un caso clínico con disminución de las reacciones adversas durante el consumo de infusión de Mate concomitante con el tratamiento con Atripla (emtricitabina, efavirenz y tenofovir disoproxilo fumarato). Se revisó la historia clínica del paciente masculino atendido en consulta externa del Instituto de Medicina Tropical &#8220;Pedro Kourí&#8221; para chequear la evolución por un año a través de los indicadores rutinarios y de progresión. La literatura más actual relacionada con las temáticas afines fue consultada.Se presenta el caso de un paciente que ha mejorado su calidad de vida al ingerir la infusión de Mate por un año y disminuir algunas de las reacciones adversas que experimentan los pacientes con VIH tratados con Atripla, sin evidencias de interacción farmacológica u otros eventos no deseados. Es importante la orientación por parte del personal médico a los pacientes con tratamiento antirretroviral como Atripla, de los posibles beneficios del consumo de la infusión de mate, como una estrategia terapéutica nutracéutica segura.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Ilex paraguariensis (mate) is one of the plants more traditionally used to elaborate infusions in South America countries. It has won prestige in world markets, including United States, Asia and Europe for their benefits in the glucose metabolism and also to present properties hypocholesterolemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, hepatoprotective and antioxidant. To report a clinical case with observed adverse reactions reduction during the concomitant consumption of mate infusion with Atripla (emtricitabine, efavirenz and tenofovir (disoproxil fumarate)) treatment. The masculine patient's clinical history assisted in external consult of the Institute of Tropical Medicine &#8220;Pedro Kourí&#8221; was revised for check evolution during one year. Accrual literature related to the case was reviewed. The presentation of a patient case that has improved its quality of life after ingestion of mate infusion when some of the Atripla adverse reactions that the patients experience with HIV diminishing without pharmacological interaction or the appearance of other side effects. It is important the patients orientation by medical personnel during antiretroviral treatment as Atripla about the benefits of mate infusion consumption as safe nutraceuticals therapeutic strategy.]]></p></abstract>
