He demonstrated that the Guilliermond process (based on the direct action of lime on the vegetable matter) reduced substantially the time required to extract and separate alkaloids as well as a variety of first principles. He demonstrated it by extracting alkaloids such as strychnine, solanine, quassin, cocaine, veratrine, rh&#339;adine, and active principles like catechin. He was the first to isolate pterocarpin from red sandalwood and to show with Hugounenq that this principle was actually a mixture of two principles, homopterocarpin and pterocarpin. They also determined their chemical and physical properties, including their composition. Latour and Cazeneuve demonstrated that catechin was the astringent agent of mahogany, and Cazeneuve and Haddon determined the properties and composition of caffeinic acid. Cazeneuve studied in detail hematin, the normal coloring substance of blood, developed a fast process for separating it, and concluded that it contained iron.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Jean-Baptiste Paul Cazeneuve (1852-1934) fue un médico, químico y político francés de mucho éxito que realizó investigación básica sobre fisiología y principios vegetales. Demostró que el procedimiento de Guilliermond (basado en la acción directa de la cal sobre la substancia vegetal) reducía en forma notable el tiempo requerido para extraer y separar alcaloides y una variedad de principios vegetales. Demostró el proceso extrayendo alcaloides como la estricnina, solanine, quassin, cocaína, veratrine, rh&#339;adina, y principios activos como la catequina. Fue el primer en aislar pterocarpina del sándalo rojo y probar con Hugounenq que este principio era actualmente una mezcla de dos principios, hómopterocarpina y pterocarpina. También determinaron sus propiedades químicas y físicas, así como su composición. Latour y Cazeneuve demostraron que la catequina era el principio astringente de la caoba, y Cazeneuve y Haddon determinaron las propiedades y composición del ácido cafeínico.
