Los métodos analíticos existentes permiten detectar la presencia de sustancias adulterantes.  Objetivo:  El objetivo de esta revisión es proporcionar una visión rápida y general de los métodos, comparando sus ventajas e inconvenientes, permitiendo definir el ámbito de aplicación ideal para cada uno de ellos.  Materiales y Métodos:  La literatura revisada muestra que las opciones analíticas pueden clasificarse en tres categorías. Los parámetros fisicoquímicos incluyen densidad, viscosidad, índice de octanos, presión de vapor Reid y curva de destilación. Los métodos cromatográficos comprenden la cromatografía líquida de alta resolución y la cromatografía de gases, mientras que los métodos espectroscópicos incluyen la espectroscopía de fluorescencia, la espectroscopía infrarroja y la espectroscopía de resonancia magnética nuclear de protón.  Resultados y Discusión:  Los parámetros físicoquímicos pueden tener una baja sensibilidad y ser insuficientes para detectar las adulteraciones. Los métodos cromatográficos precisan de tiempo, pero exigen muy poca cantidad de muestra y pueden revelar la naturaleza del adulterante. Los métodos espectroscópicos son rápidos, sensibles, la espectroscopía de 1H-NMR tiene elevado costo de la instrumentación.  Conclusiones:  La cromatografía de gases es adecuada para aquellas adulteraciones más difíciles de detectar. Los métodos espectroscópicos resultan más apropiados para procesar un elevado número de muestras. 1H-NMR es una opción muy válida, si bien espectroscopía FTIR una opción mucho más económica. En países con escasos recursos los métodos fisicoquímicos pueden ser la opción más adecuada.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  Gasoline adulteration means loss of tax revenue, mechanical damage to cars and harmful effects on health and environment. Existing analytical methods allow adulterants presence to be detected.  Objective: The objective of this review is to provide a quick and general overview of these methods, comparing their advantages and disadvantages, which allow defining the ideal scope for each of them.  Materials and Methods: The literature reviewed shows that analytical options can be classified into three categories. Physicochemical parameters include density, viscosity, octane number, Reid vapor pressure and distillation curve. Chromatographic methods include high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography, while spectroscopic methods include fluorescence spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.  Results and Discussion:  The physicochemical parameters may have a low sensitivity and they are insufficient to detect adulterations. Chromatographic methods require time, but they need very little sample and can reveal adulterant nature. Spectroscopic methods are fast, sensitive, although 1H-NMR spectroscopy has high instrumentation cost.  Conclusions:  Gas chromatography is suitable for those hardest to detect adulterations. In contrast, spectroscopic methods are more appropriate for processing a large number of samples. 1H-NMR is a very valid option, although FTIR spectroscopy is a much cheaper option. In countries with limited economic resources, physical-chemical methods may be the most appropriate option.]]></p></abstract>
