In the present research an exploratory study of the synthesis of quaternary salts of tetraaryl imidazoles substituted as an initial step towards the synthesis of ionic liquids was carried out. A tetraaryl imidazoles was synthesized using the H3BO3/ethylene glycol catalyst system. The 1-(3-methylphenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-4,5-diphenylimidazole obtained was used to perform the quaternization reaction with butyl bromide, using purification criteria as thin layer chromatography (TLC), melting temperature and as a characterization criterion for electrospray mass spectrometry.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Los líquidos iónicos son compuestos que poseen un gran número de propriedades y aplicaciones en procesos ambientalmente amigables. En la presente investigación se realizó un estudio exploratorio de la síntesis de sales cuaternarias de imidazoles tetraarilsustituidos como un paso inicial para la obtención de líquidos iónicos. Un imidazol tetrarilsustituido fue sintetizado utilzando ácido bórico como catalizador y etilengicol como disolvente. El 1-(3-metilfenil)-2-(4-nitrofenil)-4,5-difenilimidazol fue usado para llevar a cabo una reacción de cuaternización con bromuro de metilo, utilizando criterios de purificación como cromatografia de capa fina (TLC, por sus siglas en inglés), temperatura de fusión y como criterio de caracterización espectrometría de masas por electrospray.]]></p></abstract>
