Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron caracterizar el agua de mar de la playa Mar Verde y realizar experimentos de degradación de diesel comercial en esta agua, empleando un consorcio bacteriano. Se determinó el oxígeno disuelto, contenidos de nitrato y fosfato, pH y salinidad, además de la población microbiana heterótrofa y degradadora de diesel. Se realizó la cinética de degradación del diesel comercial, empleando un consorcio integrado por 4 cepas bacterianas y dos medios de cultivo: agua de mar estéril y agua de mar sin esterilizar. Los resultados de la caracterización arrojaron que los parámetros estudiados fueron similares a los normados según NC 22:1999 y NC 25:1999. La población heterótrofa fue de 87 UFC mL-1 con diversidad de morfología, las cuales no interfirieron en los experimentos de degradación. El consorcio bacteriano fue capaz de degradar a los 30 días el 53 % y el 62 % del diesel en el medio estéril y sin esterilizar, respectivamente. Se demostró que este consorcio puede ser empleado en procesos de biorremediación de agua de mar contaminada con diesel.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The inevitable dependence on petrochemicals products has resulted in a serious environmental problem in recent decades and has greatly affected aquatic ecosystems. The objectives of this research were to characterize the seawater of the Mar Verde beach and carry out commercial diesel degradation experiments in this water, using a bacterial consortium. Dissolved oxygen, nitrate and phosphate contents, pH and salinity were determined, as well as the heterotrophic and diesel degrading microbial population. The degradation kinetics of the commercial diesel was performed, using a consortium composed of 4 bacterial strains and two culture media: sterile seawater and unsterilized seawater. The characterization results showed that the parameters studied were similar to the norms according to NC 22: 1999 and NC 25: 1999. The heterotrophic population was 87 CFU mL-1 with diversity of morphology, which did not interfere in the degradation experiments. The bacterial consortium was able to degrade 53 % and 62 % of the diesel in the sterile and non-sterile medium at 30 days, respectively. It was demonstrated that this consortium could be used in diesel contaminated seawater bioremediation processes.]]></p></abstract>
