A review was carried out on the death certificates of 1 987 patients whose basic cause of death was diabetes, and who died along 1991, 1993, and 1994, in order to know the main causes of death. The certificates are in the Statistics National Direction of the Public Health Ministry; 1 282 (64,5 %) of them belong to the feminine sex, and 705 (35,5 %) to the masculine. It was verified that 62 % of the deceased had more than 70 years of age; 22,4 % were between 60 and 69 years, and a 15 % were under 59 years; 28 patients died before having 30 years of age. The most frequent direct causes were determined, and such were the acute myocardial infarction: 500 deceased (25,0 % rate); bronchopneumonia: 332 deceased (17,0 rates); acute metabolic disorder: 167 deceased (8,3 rate); kidney failure: 145 deceased (7,2 rate), and cerebrovascular accidentes: 129 deceased (6,4 rate). It was reported that from the deceased due to acute metabolic disorder, 66 patients (1,1 rate) had presented ketoacidosis, and 59 (0,8) presented hypoglycemia. The diabetic coma was reported in 35 patients (0,6 rate). When reviewing the 1993 and 1994 death certificates, in the ?findings? chapter, there are 1 846 patients who do not appear in the ?official? statistics.
