Abstract

GUANCHE GARCELL, Humberto; ZAYAS SOMOZA, Emilio  and  VALERA MENA, Rafael. Morbilidad y letalidad por asma bronquial. Rev cubana med [online]. 2001, vol.40, n.3, pp. 169-175. ISSN 1561-302X.

A descriptive study of seasonal series was conducted to know the morbidity and lethality of bronchial asthma at "Joaquín Albarrán" Clinical and Surgical Hospital. The morbidity, lethality, age, sex and geographical area of residence of the asthmatic patients that received attention from January, 1995, to December, 1999, were obtained from their medical histories. It was found that 12.7 % of the patients that received emergency care were asthmatics and that 14.7 % of them required admission. An increase of the emergency care provided to these patients was observed from the end of November to March, which is associated with winter season in the country. A discrete predominance of females and an average age of 38.3 years old were observed. It was stressed that those who go to the Emergency Department with asthma crises come from a large zone of the capital of the country. The lethality rates from asthma showed a trend to decrease in this period. No deaths were reported neither in 1998 nor in 1999. There are evidences of an inadequate utilization of the hospital services by the asthmatic patients. A multidisciplinary attention and an interrelation with the primary health care level are necessary to improve the quality of the attention and to reduce the frequent use of the hospital services
