A descriptive and analytical study of the health service demand was conducted in the area of internal medicine of the Emergency Services of "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto" Hospital and of "Dr. Mario Escalona" Polyclinic. This study was carried out from May 29, 1995, to June 3, 1995. The distribution of the demand was studied to know its behavior as to the severity of the emergencies, which were classified into: hospital emergencies, primary emergencies and non-emergencies, the way the patients visited the physician's office (referred or on their own), destiny after their assessment and the diagnostic groups and the most frequent affections of the primary emergencies. It was concluded that the highest percentage of the demand comprised the primary emergencies and the non-emergencies of those patients that went to the hospital on their own and with affections that did not require hospital care, since they may be solved at the primary health care level
