Abstract

ISSN 1561-302X.

232 hypertensive patients that were seen at the day care service of "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Clinical and Surgical Hospital were studied to evaluate the relationship existing between the blood pressure values and the hypertensive organ damage (fundus oculi). The patients were surveyed about the presence of risk factors, such as obesity and smoking. Hemochemical tests, including cholesterol and plasmatic creatinin, were made. The Chi square test was used to determine the relation between the arterial pressure levels and the variables measuring the damage to the target organ. The frequency of associated risk factors was obtained: obesity (42.7 %), smoking (38.4 %) and hyperlipidemia (19.8 %). It was proved that the association between hypercholesterolemia and the fundus oculi alterations was statistically significant (p = 0.004). It was concluded that the arterial pressure levels influenced on the hypertensive damage to the fundus oculi with values near statistical significance (p = 0.07).
