Abstract

GONZALEZ NAVARRETE, Maylín et al. Diagnosis of Ehrlichia canis in domestic dogs of Havana, Cuba. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2019, vol.41, n.2  Epub Aug 01, 2019. ISSN 2224-4700.

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME) is a multisystemic disease with complex symptoms and nonspecific clinical signs that affects domestic dogs. The aim of this work was to study the presence of Ehrlichia canis in apparently healthy domestic dogs from four municipalities in western Cuba, by visualizing blood smears and phlogistic layer smears. Two hundred fifty-three dogs of different breeds, ages and sexes were studied. They came from four municipalities in western Cuba in Havana (East Havana, Boyeros and Cotorro), and Mayabeque (San José de las Lajas) provinces. One hundred and fifty-two venous blood smears and 101 phlogistic layer smears were performed. Morulas compatible with E. canis were visualized in 6/152 (3.94 %) venous blood smears and in 8/101 (7.9 %) phlogistic layer smears, without significant differences among the results. Morula compatible with Anaplasma platys was visualized in platelets in a venous blood smear, where morula compatible with E. canis was also observed in a monocyte. The results obtained in this study demonstrated the presence of intracytoplasmic morula of E. canis in monocytes, having coinfection with A. platys in apparently healthy domestic dogs.

Keywords : Ehrlichia canis; Anaplasma platys; venous blood smear; phlogistic layer smear; coinfection.
