Abstract

A descriptive cross-sectional study was made on 62 middle-aged diabetic females from 18 physican´s offices subordinated to Tomas Romay polyclinics in Artemisa municipality. All the patients aged 45 to 59 years, who had been classified on the basis of this diagnosis in the family records, were surveyed and examined, and then a database was prepared using MICROSTA software. Student t test served to compare means, with a significance level of p<0,05. Prevalence of diabetes in the studied area amounted to 2,6%. Average age at natural menopause was 48,7 ± 4,07 years. Caucasian, diabetes type 2, and schooling of secondary level predominated. Smoking was present in 20% of females in the postmenopausal group, 61,29% of females referred blood hypertension and 32,26%k presented with ischemic cardiopathy. No trauma fractures were reported. No significant differences were found as to the body mass index means between premenopausal and postmenopausal females. However, the waist-hip index was significantly higher in the latter (p<0,01). Psychological symptoms were the most frequently referred and the most intensive in postmenopausal females. Generally speaking, the knowledge on replacement hormone therapy of the studied group was considered very poor
