A prospective study was conducted starting from the catchment of the pregnant women by the physician at the primary health care level (October 1, to December 3l, 1995) to a week after delivery. 5 health areas from Havana City and 3 from Santiago de Cuba were included. 347 pregnant women entered the study and 297 (85,6%) concluded it. The objective of this paper was to describe sociodemographic and sanitary characteristics that may be related to the use of drugs during pregnancy. Data were collected by the physician at the time of consultation in a population of early enrrolled expectants (94,2%), which allowed to know conditions such as age, smoking habit, obstetric history, nutritional state and characteristics of the delivery and of the newborn infant that may be connected with the pattern of drug use in this population.
