Abstract

NAVARRO DESPAIGNE, Daysi  and  FONTAINE SEMANAT, Yadiria. Síndrome climatérico: su repercusión social en mujeres de edad mediana . Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2001, vol.17, n.2, pp. 169-176. ISSN 1561-3038.

A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted to describe the clinical features of the climacteric syndrome (CS) and its social and familiar influence. 340 women aged 40-59, who were permanent residents in Centro Habana Municipality were included in the study. We found that 69 % were in the postmenopausal stage and that waves of heat were more frequent during the early stage of postmenopausia (78,5 %) and that they decreased in the subsequent years (34,1 %, p < 0,05), a period where insomnia had its highest frequency. 49,7 % considered their symptoms as very annoying. 23 % of these women made reference to their abscences from work due to the climacteric symptomatology. Only 42 % asked for medical care and 53,3 % received nonhormonal therapy. Family members were comprehensive and helpful in 140 women (41,7 %). As the climacterium affects the quality of life, it is necessary that family physicians know the pecularities of this stage in order to establish the appropriate behaviour for each woman
