Abstract

GUANCHE GARCELL, Humberto et al. Factores de riesgo de accidentalidad en conductores profesionales de entidades transportistas. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2003, vol.19, n.5, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3038.

Traffic accidents are presently one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide. With the objective of identifying accident risk factors, a descriptive study of 78 professional drivers from three transport companies from Pinar del Rio province was made in November, 2002. The evaluation comprised general aspects, cardiovascular risks, stress and alcoholism. All the data was analyzed by statistical technique of frequency distribution analysis. The average age of drivers was 49,16 years (9,60%) and driving experience amounted to 25,11 years (10,16%). The most referred disease was blood hypertension (19,23%) followed by bronchial asthma (11,53%). Likewise, 24,3% of drivers stated that they took some medication on a regular basis. 44,9% were active smokers, 9% ex smokers and 10,2% passive smokers. 36,1% had some sistodiastolic hypertension whereas 33,4% of those without history of blood hypertension showed raised blood tension. 60,2% had slight stress and 9% moderate stress. Additionally, 17,9% were alcohol consumers, which was additionally suspected in 7,7% of the studied drivers. The global accident risk is at least moderate, given the frequency and association of risk factors found in the professional drivers.
