Abstract

Background: dengue is a viral disease which is transmitted by arthropods of more importance in morbidity terms and mortality. This ailment and its hemorrhagic variant are added to the growing list of emergent disease that Latin America, Asian Southeast, Middle East, Africa and Western Pacific affect. Objective: to apply an educational intervention to elevate the level of knowledge in the population on dengue. Method: an experimental study of educational intervention was carried out in the doctors office ten of the health area corresponding to the Previsora Polyclinic, from January to December 2008. The universe was constituted by six-hundred ten people; a sample of one-hundred seventy-five of them was taken through a simple random sampling that fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria to those were applied a questionnaire. This investigation was carried out in three stages: diagnostic, intervention and evaluation. Results: it was evidenced that before receiving the educational works were scarce the knowledge that possessed the population about what dengue is, which is the vector that transmits it, where it lives, which its habits are; the transmission via, the symptoms of this disease and the measures to take to protect us. Conclusions: at the beginning of the investigation the population had little knowledge on dengue, after the intervention a significant increase was achieved, for what was considered effective the intervention.
