Abstract

The objective of the present paper was to assess the effect of the aqueous extract from the bark of Mangifera indica L. recommended to more than 2 000 patients suffering from with different diseases that were seen at a phytotherapy department, in Havana City. The sample included 412 patients that had been under treatment from 6 to 18 months and fulfilled the requirements necessary to give an answer to the objectives established. The activity of this natural extract was evaluated by interviews to the patients, the phsysician's criterium and the results of the tests carried out at institutions of the National Health System. The entity most frequently treated was cancer, where a high percentage of patients improved their quality of life. Good results were observed in diabetes mellitus, prostatic hyperplasia, bronchial asthma, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus and dermatitis. This study is the first one published in Cuba about the ethnomedical use of this extract.
