Abstract

TILLAN CAPO, Juana I et al. Cicatrizing effect of the cream of ethanolic extract from sugar cane wax. Rev Cubana Plant Med [online]. 2004, vol.9, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1028-4796.

Objective: To evaluate the cicatrizing activity of semisolid formulations prepared with different concentrations of ethanolic extract from sugar cane wax (2, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 %) in mice with wounds in the dorsal scapular area. Panternol cream 5 % was used as positive control. Methods: wounds of 2 cm2 were made in the scapular dorsal area of mice of 30 g of body weight. The substance to be evaluated was applied for 21 days. The time of appearance, the falling of the crust and the cicatrization of the area were also observed during that period. At the end of the treatment, the animals were sacrificed for taking fragments of regenerated skin and for its further processing and histological evaluation. Dermis maturation was classified into 3 degrees and 7 stages, starting from the presence of fibroblasts of greater or lesser degree related to the collagen fibers, neoformation vessels, presence or not of pilosebaceous follicles and round cell infiltrates. The animals that were given classfications of stages 6 or 7 , were considered as a positive response for the calculation of the fiftieth effective dose. Results: it was found a dose-cicatrizing effect relation in the range of concentrations from 2.4 to 10 % of the ethanolic extract from sugar cane wax in the formulation. It was not so for the creams containing from 20 to 40 %, where the action decreased as the extract increased. The fiftieth effective dose of the formulation was 5.1 %. Conclusions: the formulations of creams containing 5 and 10 % of ethanolic extract of sugar cane wax showed the best cicatrizing effects of wounds in mice, comparable with the attained with the cream pantenol 5 %.
