A descriptive, cross sectional and retrospective study of 175 patients who required invasive mechanical ventilation, admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of "Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Teaching General Hospital in Sant iago de Cuba was carried out during the year 2012, in order to characterize the aspects related to morbidity and mortality in these affected patients. It was evidenced that the risk of dying for these patients was associated with factors, such as: advanced age, marked physiologic alterations in connection with their past medical histories, duration of mechanical ventilation and prolonged stay in the unit. The pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation prevailed as the main cause of death directly related to highly invasive gramnegative microorganisms and the highest number of deads corresponded the operated patients
