MORALES PINEIRO, Sergio; LENNOX WARNER, Darryl; MATA CUEVAS, Roberto  and  MORERA ESTEVEZ, Lourdes. Value of knee arthroscopy in the older adult. Medicentro Electrónica [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.1, pp. 27-37. ISSN 1029-3043.

Introduction: arthroscopy is an advanced technology offered in Villa Clara province since the middle decade of the 80's. Objective: to determine the manifestation of knee arthroscopy in the older adult in patients attended in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Service at «Mártires del 9 de Abril» Hospital in Sagua la Grande from January, 2011 to December, 2012. Methods: a prospective, longitudinal and descriptive study was carried out. Study population was constituted by all the geriatric population who were attended at knee arthroscopy services. Sample was selected using a non-probabilistic sampling according to criteria and it was made up by 152 patients. Results: female sex aged 60 to 64 years predominated. Right knee was the most frequent location, and pain was the universal symptom followed by crackling sounds and joint effusion. Obesity and Böhler and Mc Murray Tests were positive during physical examination, with a higher frequency in internal meniscus. Chondromalacia grade IV predominated among other non-meniscal diagnoses followed by chronic synovitis. Evaluation of pain, rigidity and functional capacity before applying the treatment showed important impairments; a significant increase of the spheres evaluated by Lysholm score was reached after arthroscopic treatment. Conclusions: encouraging mid-term results were obtained with this treatment in older adults. That is why, its rational practice is recommended in this population group in order to improve their quality of life and to reduce morbidity
