Abstract

FABERO RODRIGUEZ, Wirson. Medical education. A contribution to the social medical ideal for the health benefit of the Villa Clara population. Medicentro Electrónica [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.4  Epub Dec 01, 2023. ISSN 1029-3043.

Medical education after 1959 was part of the deep process of social transformations that took place in Cuba. The crisis generated by the exodus of professionals and the chaotic health situation that the nation was experiencing, urgently promoted the massive training of doctors. To this end, three institutions were created in the sixties, including Santa Clara Medical School, which opened a new chapter in the history of public health in the province. The characteristics and demands of the training model materialized in a solid scientific training of their physicians, committed to social problems and to their homeland. The link of these professionals with workers and peasants, together with the moral, organizational, financial and judicial support offered by the government, contributed decisively to the construction of the social medical ideal necessary for the changes and sustainment of the achievements achieved in the health fields.
