Abstract

AVILES PACHECO, Rubén; SOTOMAYOR SANCHEZ, Eleuterio; GUIBERT SANCHEZ, Guillermo  and  MARTINEZ SUAREZ, Yolanda. Rice Seeds Vulnerability to the Damage Caused by Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae). Fitosanidad [online]. 2009, vol.13, n.1, pp. 7-10. ISSN 1818-1686.

Five laboratory trails at 30°C and 78.0% RH were carried out in order to achieved details about R. dominica ovipositional sites on storedrice seeds var. J-104, as well as larvae behavior according to caryopsis healthy. Gravid females mixed with different qualities of seeds as healthy whole seeds, cut seeds (husk damaged) and deformed ones were used. Possibilities of larvae to penetrate inside de whole and healthy caryopsis were evaluated also. Evaluations made seven days later showed that R. dominca laid their eggs only at the exterior ofcaryopside surface at whole and healthy rice seeds, while in the case of abnormalities seeds the female laid their eggs mainly inside the caryopside, basically between pericarp and endosperm. One important observation done pointed out that larvae were unable to penetrate rice seeds with healthy husk as well as with close and tightly glumela link around endosperm
