Abstract
CORDOVA LOPEZ, Luis F. and LAMAZARES GONZALEZ, Roberto. Simulation of wind and wave fields associated to hurricanes. RIHA [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.2, pp. 41-50. ISSN 1680-0338.
A mathematical model has been used (SWAN) as a platform to calibrate the main variables of two empiric winds fields very used in the simulation of meteorological phenomena, more specifically of hurricanes. To this end a study case was selected choosing one of the strongest hurricanes that have ever come close or accross the Cuban island: hurricane Iván. The calibration was carried out by comparing simulation results against measurements obtained from two buoys of the NOAA located in the gulf of Mexico. In order to substantiate the truthfulness of the calibration results another comparison was made against altimetry data taken from satellite and with a buoy of the NOAA, but now using another hurricane as study case, the hurricane Wilma.
