Abstract

ALMORA RODRIGUEZ, Anay et al. Influence of atmospheric changes in the occurrence of deep venous thrombosis of the limbs. Rev Cubana Angiol Cir Vasc [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.1, pp. 21-28. ISSN 1682-0037.

Introduction: the deep venous thrombosis presupposes high morbidity and mortality rates, but effective measures are available for its prevention and treatment. It has been said that the occurrence of deep venous thrombosis and atmospheric changes are related. Objective: to describe the influence of atmospheric changes and of the seasons of the year in the occurrence of deep venous thrombosis of the limbs. Methods: a descriptive study was carried out in 90 patients admitted to the Phlebolymphology service of the National Institute of Angiology and Vascular Surgery with the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis of the limbs in the period from January through December, 2012. Months of the year, and the atmospheric variables temperature and pressure were taken into consideration. Results: the months with the highest incidence of deep venous thrombosis were September and December. In the rainiest period in Cuba, there was just a slight increase in the number of cases in June whereas higher increase was observed in September with lower atmospheric pressure compared to those registered in previous months. Low temperatures registered in that year had no influence on the occurrence of the disease. Conclusions: atmospheric pressure changes tending to lower values and abundant rains have some influence on the onset of deep venous thrombosis, so it is necessary in certain periods of the year to apply a suitable prophylaxis in those patients at risk.

Keywords : deep venous thrombosis; atmospheric changes; incidence.
