Abstract

GARCIA BARRIOS, Clara Rufina; MENENDEZ CABEZAS, Arturo Teodoro  and  FERNANDEZ FRANCH, Neyda. Results of doctorate formation within the health care sector of Camagüey. Rev Hum Med [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1727-8120.

We carried out a descriptive study to assess the achievements of the Territorial Commission of Scientific Degrees in the province of Camagüey since 2004. We reviewed the normative documents of the Cuban System of Scientific Degrees, the developing strategies for the health sector, the strategy designed for Camagüey, and the records of the Office of Scientific Degrees and the Direction of Investigations. We assessed the Commission, the Direction of Investigations, and the Provincial Scientific Council’s joint work on diffusion, motivation, and identification of potentials and training needs, and on consultancy, assessment, and control of projects belonging to the Territorial Environmental Health and Hygiene Program and the Branch Programs of Health. In our opinion, projects with social, economic, and scientific effects must grow to be doctoral theses of leading investigators. From 2004 to 2008, 12 doctorate defenses were successfully completed, representing the highest figure ever reached. Four applicants are to obtain their scientific degree this year, while 25 have passed the minimal exams. A pre-doctoral training system has been set up; it is currently under improvement. Other higher education institutions have actively collaborated as well. Results support new strategies for doctorate formation, such as doctoral tutorials and postdoctoral training.

Keywords : postgraduate education; doctoral formation; health care sector.
