Abstract

MEDINA BATISTA, Ángel. Small-scale gold mining in the central portion of Sierra Maestra: economical perspective in the current context. Min. Geol. [online]. 2020, vol.36, n.1, pp. 106-123.  Epub Mar 31, 2020. ISSN 1993-8012.

The National Office of Mineral Resources of Cuba keeps enough information, although insufficiently systematized, about the small mining developed in the central portion of La Sierra Maestra (Santiago de Cuba) from 1902 to 1958. The processing of this information has revealed existence of dozens of important mining preserves with hundreds of mining concessions, from which significant amounts of copper, gold and silver were extracted; and has provided new data on the types of mineralization and their quality that constitute direct indexes to explore. These prospects, although virtually abandoned, have a great interest in the current economic context, so their perspectives must be evaluated.

Keywords : copper; gold; silver; small mining; Sierra Maestra; mining development; mineral resources.
