Abstract

BONET PEREZ, Camilo  and  RICARDO CALZADILLA, Martha P. Quality of irrigation water and its possible effect in the agricultural yields in Sierra Cubitas Crop Enterprise. Rev Cie Téc Agr [online]. 2011, vol.20, n.3, pp. 19-23. ISSN 2071-0054.

The high levels of Na+ and Cl- in the water used to irrigate at Sierra de Cubitas Crop Enterprise, together to the toxicity signs and poor vegetative development of potato, have carried to the Direction of the Agricultural Ministry to issue the need if it worth or not, to keep the planned sowing levels of this crop there. The study carried out indicates that though it is real the toxic effect on the crop, it is not the unique factor that hinders the agricultural yields. The Na+ and Cl- levels found in the water can produce toxicity on potato, increase themselves with the irrigation technology used; that’s why, the use and an inadequate management of waters of poor quality influenced largely in the productive results of the Enterprise. The study suggests modifications to the irrigation system, aimed at diminishing the negative effects over the yields.
