The information systems in the organizations represent the communication channel between the different processes that are carried out and the information that each of them produces which is used by the top management to proceed to the decision making process. The Inter-American Development Bank proposes a series of elements to measure the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises within which information systems are located. The present study aimed to analyze the use of information systems as one of the elements proposed by the IDB to achieve competitiveness in small and medium enterprises. A non - experimental research of documentary type was developed and it consisted in carrying out a bibliographical revision on the definition of information systems by the different authors and in addition consultations of scientific articles related to the subject were realized. It was concluded that, in fact, information systems are a main element to be taken into account when measuring and increasing the competitiveness of PYMES
