Abstract

VAZQUEZ RODRIGUEZ, Romel. Use of free geographical information systems for the protection of the environment. Case study: raster map management with climate data. Universidad y Sociedad [online]. 2018, vol.10, n.2, pp. 158-164.  Epub Feb 03, 2018. ISSN 2218-3620.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an essential tool in many areas related to land management, including the processes of demographic analysis, environmental protection, planning applications and resource management. Visualization and analysis of scientific data is also of vital importance in the organization and planning of the land. This paper presents the main characteristics of some free software-based GIS, the potential they have for the simple statistical calculation of temporal sequences of rástermaps is showed. We present a case study with weather data from Catalonia, Spain. We developed a module for Sextante which together with gvSIG facilitate the calculation of simple statistics on sequences of rástermaps.
