Abstract

MOLINA LANGE, Natasha Theresa  and  CERVANTES RIOS, José Carlos. Image and Perception of Socio-Spatial Insecurity in Settlements in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Estudios del Desarrollo Social [online]. 2020, vol.8, n.1  Epub Apr 14, 2020. ISSN 2308-0132.

This paper is based on a study entitled «Collective Identities in Informal Settlements in Puerto Vallarta», but it only deals with spatial perception of insecurity and fear in three settlements in this city. The fieldwork was done in settlements whose inhabitants are marked with stigmata due to poor housing conditions and their experiences over time. Levels of urban consolidation were compared, and factors and conditions influencing perceptions were examined. Although each experience within the space is permeated by the imaginary, ways in which experiences and events are told determine fear and social tension to a large extent, and cause social uncertainty. Finally, it is discussed how urban space causes stereotypes to form, which damage the image and significance of these places.

Keywords : local development; stigmatization; socio-spatial insecurity; socio-spatial perception.
