Abstract
ARIAS RAMIREZ, Rafael; SANCHEZ HERNANDEZ, Leonardo and RODRIGUEZ MORALES, Marlen. Poverty and Inequality in Costa Rica - A View beyond Income Distribution. Estudios del Desarrollo Social [online]. 2020, vol.8, n.1 Epub Apr 14, 2020. ISSN 2308-0132.
This paper examines spatial characteristics of poverty and inequality in Costa Rica, and the distribution of these according to urban and rural areas. A multidimensional approach is adopted, and the Unsatisfied Basic Needs (UBNs) method is used. The paper is aimed at emphasizing that, although income level is an important factor to determine whether or not poverty is due to low income, is not the only one. In this respect spatial and territorial factors are analyzed in order to explain differences in access to public services (education and health care), and labor market opportunities, which influence poverty levels and inequality.
Keywords : poverty; inequality; income distribution; urban areas; rural areas.
