Abstract

BELL LARA, José  and  DELLO BUONO, Ricardo A.. Imperialism and Neoliberalism. Estudios del Desarrollo Social [online]. 2020, vol.8, n.1  Epub Apr 14, 2020. ISSN 2308-0132.

This paper examines sociopolitical changes in Latin America over the 1980s when international financial institutions took advantage of the debt crisis to promote neoliberal policies across the continent, along with a formal democracy. These circumstances resulted in the deterioration of living conditions of most people and occurrence of various social conflicts. As a result, the political map of Latin America changed in the early 21st century, with many progressive governments emerging, whose good and bad moves are examined in this paper. Over the last five years, the new Right went onto the offensive. It is described here as well.

Keywords : Latin America; foreign debt; neoliberalism; the new Right; progressivism.
