Abstract

ZABALA ARGUELLES, María del Carmen; PENATE LEIVA, Ana Isabel; DIAZ PEREZ, Danay  and  NUNEZ MORALES, Ileana. Social inequalities in current Cuban society. Challenges for education. Estudios del Desarrollo Social [online]. 2023, vol.11, n.3  Epub Dec 01, 2023. ISSN 2308-0132.

The article is the result of the homonymous panel presented by the authors at the 17th International Colloquium of the French Association of Comparative Education and Exchanges (AFDECE), which met at the University of Havana between October 25 and 28, 2022. The contents reflect, to some extent, the behavior of social inequalities in recent times in Cuba, which are expressed in a particular way in the educational field. This imposes challenges to educational and other policies, as well as to decision makers, for the guarantee of this human right in young populations. For infants, adolescents and young people, the school space is an area of socialization par excellence; hence the need to address inequalities, inequities, and gaps, from an intersectional approach, taking into consideration conditions that generate discrimination and make these populations vulnerable. Reference is also made to the challenges imposed by COVID-19, which will not fail to have implications in the post-pandemic period.

Keywords : social inequalities; education; migration; social vulnerabilities; Cuba.
