Each year the number of requests and concessions of patents increases, as a consequence of the technological boom of these decades, making possible a greater scientific exploitation of their data.  Unlike some years ago, there are in the scientific literature a lot of studies of technological vigilance, prospective, business intelligence, and evaluation of science and technology, among other scientometric works using this information source as the main data unit in their technological analyses. For this reason and for the popularity acquired by patents as an information source in the metric studies of information, the importance of the correct interpretation and use of these documents is analyzed. Likewise, it is also recommended that the information analysts that are in charge of their study should keep a systematic review of all the stipulations and corrective documents issued on this regard in order to maintain a constant updating of their procedure.  The patent document is briefly revised according to some stipulations of the World Intellectual Property Organization, published in its manuals and principal documents.  Finally, those characteristics of their structure being of greater interest for the different studies that this information source made possible were analyzed
