Abstract

Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 1998, vol.37, n.3, pp. 160-165. ISSN 1561-2945.

A retrospective study on the use of prophylactic antibiotics therapy in 186 patients with acute appendicitis, hysterectomy and colon surgery was conducted at the «Joaquín Albarrán» Clinical and Surgical Teaching Hospital. A prospective study of 125 patients under the same conditions was also performed with fisrt-and third-generation cephalosporins to assess their efficacy in the presence of postoperative sepsis and their cost/benefit. It was demonstrated that when the perioperative prophylaxis is utilized there is a 50 % decrease of the sepsis risk and a reduction of hospital costs of more than $ 24 000. As regards first-generation cephalosporin (cefalozin) and third-generation cephalosporin (ceftrioxone) it was proved that there are no significant differences in connection with the use or one or another to prevent sepsis. However, first-generation cephalosporins (cefazolin) present considerable advantages in the cost/benefit relationship
