Abstract

In order to know the most demanded operations and the surgical services consuming more blood components, all the transfusions administered at the surgical unit of the "Dr. Luis Diaz Soto" Higher Institute of Military Medicine, in Havana City, from February 1 to June 30, 1997, were registered. The operations that consumed a higher volume of blood proved to be abdominal reconstruction, pulmonary lobectomy, sigmoidectomy, uteroneocystostomy and nephrectomy. The surgery, orthopedics and gynecology services were among the greatest consumers. The criteria of consumption did not differ a lot from those referred to by other authors
