A croos-sectional descriptive study of 189 patients who underwent ambulatory major surgery at the <?Amalia Simoni<? Provincial Clinical and Surgical Hospital of Camagüey from June, 1994, to December, 1995, was carried out. Males of all ages were operated on. More men than women were operated on for a ratio of 1.6:1. Most of women were between 16 and 45 years old. Inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, breast nodule and surgical sterilization accounted for more than 80 % of the affections
