Abstract

4 patients with pneumocephalus that received medical attention at the "Agostinho Neto" General teaching Hospital of Guatánamo during 6 years are presented. They were all males with an average age of 38.2 years old. The most frequent cause of traumatic origin was observed in 3 patients, accounting for 75 %. The progressive decrease of the level of conciousness and the psychomotor agitation which were present in 75 % of the individuals were the most usual clinical manifestations in the initial period, whereas deep coma 8 Glasgow´s scale lower or equal to 8 points) predominated among 50 % of the patients in the state period. The commonest localization of the air was described in 50 % the subdural space in 50 % of the sick. Tension pneumocephalus was found in only one patient. Pneumocephalus was associated with a high mortality and in our report 50 % of the patients died
