MORENO RAJADEL, René Esteban; DIAZ GONZALEZ, Alejandro  and  FIGUEROA HERNANDEZ, Armando. Cirugía mayor ambulatoria en otorrinolaringología. Rev Cubana cir [online]. 2000, vol.39, n.1, pp. 10-16. ISSN 1561-2945.

A descriptive study was conducted aimed at analyzing and evaluating the results of the application of major ambulatory surgery in the Otorhinolaryngology Service of the " Gustavo aldereguía Lima" Provincial Clinical and Surgical Teaching Hospital, in Cienfuegos, from May, 1995, to December, 1998. An ambulatory medical history was made that included informed consent in order to follow up the outpatient and to collect data. 849 with 22 nosological entities were trected and 14 different surgical procedures were used. The affections with the highest incidence were: nasal sptum deviation (35. 0 %), suspicion of lung malignant neoplasia (19. 8 %) and polyps of the vocal cords (9.8 %). A predominance of young patients was observed, since 54.5 % of the sick subjects were between 15 and 35 years old. A tear of the nasal mucosa appeared as an accident in 46 patients (5.4 %) during the transoperative period, and 2 complications ocurred in 4 of those who were undergoing surgery (0.5 %). In the postoperative there were 2 complications in ll of the patients that were operated on (1. 3 %). None of these accidents and complications compromised the patients´ life. There were no organic or functional sequelae. The postoperative stay of the patients in the institution was under 1 hour in 74. 9 % of the operated on and only 3 of them required admission (0.4 %). An increase of bed availability was attained, whereas the hospital costs (anapproximate saving of $ 182 141, 24) resulting from non- hospital admission were reduced
