Abstract

38 medical histories of patients who were admitted due to abdominal trauma with pancreatic injuries in the "Dr. Mario C. Rivas" Honduran Institute of Social Security, in private clinics of San Pedro Sula and in the Teaching Hospital of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, from January 1st, 1995, to December 31st, 1996, were reviewed. Males predominated in this series (86.6%) and the pancreatic injuries were more frequent in the third decade of life (42.1%). In all the cases of this series the trauma mechanism was penetrating and the causal agents were gunshot (68.4%) and stabbing (31.6%). The injury-operation time was under 5 hours in 44.5% of the cases. The most frequent associated injuries were those of the stomach (71%), liver (26.3%) and diaphragm (26.3%)
