Abstract

25 cases of pancreatoduodenectomy due to cancer of the periampullar region that were operated on at "Dr. Joaquin Castillo Duany" Military Hospital, in Santiago de Cuba, and "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay" Military Hospital, in Havana City, from 1987 to 1999, are reported. 64 % corresponded to cancer of the head of the pancreas, whereas 24, 8 and 4 % corresponded to papilla, duodenum and distal choledochus cancer, respectively. Two thirds of this series were in the fifth and sixth decades of life with an average of 56 years old (range 31-80). 6 patients were reoperated due to different causes and the operative mortality rate (30 days) was 12 %
